MapinduziSat-1
A CubeSat built to place Tanzania among the small group of countries with a privately developed satellite mission — designed for Earth observation and environmental monitoring from low Earth orbit.
Overview
MapinduziSat-1 is OLSPACE's CubeSat mission — an attempt to design, build, and launch the first privately owned satellite in Tanzania. The project sits at the intersection of two things OLSPACE already does: satellite engineering and STEM education, and it's meant to prove both are possible from Dar es Salaam, not just from countries with existing space programs.
Mission
Two goals run in parallel. The first is technical: collect Earth observation and environmental monitoring data from low Earth orbit. The second is human: give students and early-career engineers in Tanzania and the wider sub-Saharan region a real satellite mission to learn from, not a simulation of one.
Why it matters here
What a working ground station and satellite actually change for the people around it.
Resource & climate monitoring
Data from MapinduziSat-1 is intended to support environmental research, natural resource management, and disaster prediction work — the kind of monitoring that's normally bought from foreign satellite operators.
A ground station people can use
The mission includes a ground station built to be understood, not just operated — a place where people can see, in real time, how a satellite actually talks to Earth.
SatNOGS integration
Telemetry is planned to be shared through SatNOGS, the international open-source ground station network, so people outside Tanzania can pull real data from the mission too.
A mission students can point to
Every subsystem on this satellite was touched by someone who could otherwise only read about satellite engineering, not practice it. That's the point as much as the orbit is.
